Wayfinding signage provides clear directions that help customers navigate a space with ease. Think of wayfinding as the quiet architect of a positive shopping experience. Without it, even the best stores can leave customers feeling lost, literally and figuratively.

Studies show that 73% of shoppers experience frustration when they can’t find something in a store. Other surveys claim that up to 67% have left a shop at least once without finding what they were after, and 43% of those went to a competitor to get the product.

Our survey findings confirm the importance of wayfinding signage in delivering outstanding retail experiences that lead to sales. Let’s look at the results in detail.

1. What Enhances the Shopping Experience the Most?

The in-store experience is more than just finding products—it’s about how customers feel while shopping. When asked what would enhance their experience the most, nearly 75% of respondents pointed to organized layouts and ease of finding items, significantly ahead of other factors like a pleasant décor (40%) or helpful staff (48%).

Wayfinding signage is the basis of an organized layout. Aisle markers, directional signs, and other forms of signage guide customers to featured products and simplify their journey through every corner of a store in an intuitive and inviting way.

2. Ease of Navigation Comes First

When we asked shoppers what they considered the most important factor when choosing a store, 21.4% highlighted ease of navigation and the ability to find products. Although this may seem secondary to factors like pricing (which 64% identified as their top priority), the reality is that poor navigation can be a deal breaker. After all, what good are competitive prices if customers can’t locate the products?

By placing effective wayfinding signage, retailers can eliminate confusion and create a sense of flow that encourages customers to explore. That sense of ease isn’t just convenient: it’s memorable and guides your customers' purchasing decisions.

In fact, when asked what they considered the most important aspect of a store fit-out, 46.8% of respondents selected clear signage and wayfinding. That’s more than double the number of responses that prioritized minimalistic designs (17%) or even aesthetic décor (17%).

This finding highlights that customers value the practical aspects of retail environments. While a beautifully designed store may draw attention, it’s the functionality of the space that truly makes a difference. Our survey found that while 46.8% of respondents appreciate staff assistance, 53.2% prefer to browse independently with the help of clear signage.

For these independent shoppers, signage is a welcome and non-intrusive guide. Well-placed, clear, and visually engaging signs empower customers to explore at their own pace so they feel more in control of their shopping journey.

This doesn’t just enhance their experience; it also frees up staff so they can focus on other tasks or offer personalized assistance when needed. In other words, wayfinding signage is a great asset in creating efficient retail spaces for customers and staff.

5. Lost Customers = Lost Sales

There’s no sugarcoating it: 59.2% of shoppers admitted to avoiding a store because it was difficult to find items or navigate the space. That’s more than half of potential customers deciding not to return because their initial experience was frustrating.

This statistic underscores the importance of getting wayfinding right. When navigation feels effortless, customers are more likely to explore and make purchases. And for those who might be on the fence about returning, clear and creative signage can tip the scales.

Our research is consistent with other studies, which have found a correlation between wayfinding, foot traffic, and sales growth in 4 out of the five stores surveyed.

6. Signage Still Reigns Supreme

Despite the rise of digital solutions, 75% of survey respondents preferred signage over options like staff guidance (17.4%) or digital kiosks (7.6%). This preference confirms the timeless appeal and reliability of physical signs, especially in retail spaces where good flow and clarity are essential to the experience.

The lesson here is simple: although technology has its place, it’s no substitute for well-designed and strategically placed signage. Retailers can ensure their signage remains an asset by focusing on quality, customization, and clarity.

7. Memorable Experiences Trump Pricing

54.8% of survey participants indicated they would return to a store with slightly higher prices if it provided a memorable experience. This insight suggests there is a fantastic opportunity for retailers to stand out by investing in experiential signage elements.

Wayfinding signage contributes significantly to creating a memorable shopping journey.
