Effective Signage Placement Strategies for Maximum Visibility

LED neon signage can go a long way to improving a brand’s visibility, but having a dazzling sign alone isn’t enough to capture the public’s attention. When it comes to signage, placement matters as much as design, and even the most creative and professionally designed sign can be overlooked if it’s not installed in the right place.

In this article, we discuss the secrets of the optimum sign height and placement and explore the key factors that contribute to achieving maximum visibility for your commercial sign.

The Basics of Effective Commercial Signage

  1. Clarity - A visually cluttered sign can do more harm than good. Simple is usually better; ensure you keep your message clear and concise so that passersby understand the concept in just a few seconds.

  2. Font choice - Choose a font that aligns with your brand personality. Bold and legible fonts work well for signs meant to be seen from a distance, as they ensure that your message doesn't get lost in busy environments.

  3. Color - Vibrant and contrasting colors can make your sign pop, getting all eyes drawn to your store. Don’t be afraid of experimenting with colors – you don’t have to limit your sign’s color scheme to your brand colors.

  4. Size - Consider the size of your sign in relation to its surroundings. A sign that's too small might not get noticed, but one that is too big can be overwhelming or even off-putting.

  5. Uniqueness - Don't shy away from custom designs. A bespoke neon sign can reflect your brand's uniqueness visually, making it more memorable for your audience.

Height and Signage Placement

With these basic guidelines in mind, let's discuss the optimum height placement for commercial signs. This will depend on various factors, such as whether the sign is visible to pedestrians and/or road users.

Placement requirements also vary depending on your business location – they will differ if your business is located inside a shopping centre, on the street, faces a busy road, or is near a highway.

Having said that, there are some general considerations that apply in most cases:

In-Store and Point of Purchase Signage Placement

Despite the rise of online shopping, consumers continue to favor brick-and-mortar shopping, with in-store sales accounting for 84.6% of all retail purchases in the US. Strategically placed, engaging, eye-catching in-store and POP signage remains important for retailers. Key considerations for placement are high foot traffic areas such as entrances, checkout counters, or aisle ends; the natural flow of customer movement; proximity to related products or complementary items; engagement zones, immersive experiences, and larger dedicated displays for a single product or brand.

Signage Placement for Street-Level Visibility

For signs targeting foot traffic, eye-level placement is key. One of the principles of visual merchandising, which also applies to signage, is that eye level is buy level. However, if the sign is on a busy street with a lot of pedestrian traffic, you can also consider placing it slightly above eye level. And if other store signs block the view, you may want to angle the sign 45 degrees up or down from eye level and check if this makes it more visible.

Visibility can also be enhanced if the sign is placed somewhere pedestrians tend to stop or gather (for example, when waiting for traffic lights or near a public transport station). In any case, you want to remember that someone with average vision will see a sign clearly 20 to 23ft (6 to 7m) away assuming nothing else blocks their view.

Signage Placement that Caters to Drivers

If your business is near a busy road rather than on a pedestrian area, it’s vital to ensure that it's visible from a farther distance and that it is directly within the driver's line of sight for safety reasons. In this situation, scale is particularly important to determine how easily it will be seen. As a general guideline, every inch of letter height in a sign is visible for 10 feet.

Also, depending on where you’re based, local rules and regulations may apply to outdoor advertising, so check with your local authority or signage company.

Other Factors to Maximise Visibility

  1. Brightness - Go for high-intensity lighting that remains vibrant in different weather conditions and at different times of the day. Brightness is measured in lumens per foot. LED neon signs offer offer anything from 24 to 85 lumens/foot, with the added benefit that they can be dimmed - brighter isn’t always better, especially in indoor settings.

  2. Contrast - Ensure there is ample contrast between your sign and its background. This enhances legibility, making your message clear and distinct. Currently, LED neon signs come in up to 18 colors, so you can be sure to find the ideal contrast between your custom sign and the background.

  3. Ease of Maintenance - Whether your sign is placed indoors or outdoors, it will need some level of maintenance to ensure it keeps shining bright. With traditional neon signs, you’d need regular professional maintenance to keep them in pristine condition, which adds to your business expenses. This is not the case with LED neon, which has no special maintenance requirements to remain bright.

  4. Dynamic Displays - Dynamic signs that change colors or have animated elements can boost visibility and spark curiosity in passersby. You can get creative with dynamic custom LED neon signs and make a huge impact.

Conclusion

Signage is a powerful tool for marketing and brand visibility, especially when modern technologies like LED neon lighting are used in business signage. This option can be very cost-effective for brands looking to grow their customer base and increase their ROI through repeat business and high engagement levels, both in-store and online.
